New 18th anniversary edition of the long out of print āStudio One Soul 2ā, theĀ long-awaited second volume of one of the largest selling Soul Jazz RecordsĀ Studio One collections.
āStudio One Soul 2ā takes us deep into Jamaicaās long-standing fascinationĀ with American soul and funk music.
Featuring a host of seminal Reggae artists who all first established theirĀ careers at Studio One before finding worldwide success. Featured artistsĀ include Horace Andy, The Heptones, Cornell Campbell, Ken Boothe, JackieĀ Mittoo, Jacob Miller and many more Studio One legends interpreting bothĀ classic and little-known American soul and funk tunes by the likes of CurtisĀ Mayfield, Bill Withers, The Five Stairsteps, Marvin Gaye, The Stylistics, LeeĀ Dorsey, Al Green, Syl Johnson and more.
Curtis Mayfield is without a doubt the main soul influence for many reggaeĀ groups in the 1960s and 1970s. Cornell Campbellās āTen to Oneā is aĀ stunning recut of the original Studio One single by The Mad Lads, who firstĀ covered this Curtis-penned hit for the Impressions. Another great CurtisĀ Mayfield production, The Five Stairsteps and Cubieās āDonāt Changeā isĀ interpreted by Studio One soul man Winston Francis. Similarly, Devon
Russellās superb āMake Me Believe in Youā is, if anything, superior to CurtisĀ Mayfieldās ground-breaking original.
While American soul and funk remain a constant source of inspiration on thisĀ album, classic DJs such as Prince Jazzbo and Little Joe also used theseĀ rhythms to ride vocal toasts over to serious effect.
This selection features a mixture of classics, rare and unreleased tracks fromĀ Studio One, all lovingly digitally re-mastered for this release.
The new CD edition comes as digipack plus extensive booklet.
The vinyl edition comes on yellow coloured loud double vinyl housed in aĀ gatefold sleeve with download code.
"After eulogizing Morgan Khanās āStreet Soundsā series, I would have to addĀ that Soul Jazz have done what Khan did for electro for reggae, by doing theĀ hard work for the listener and releasing one quality compilation after another,Ā all packed with the finest reggae songs around.ā - White Noise
