Â
Acclaimed Polish cellist and composer Dobrawa Czocher returns with her contemplative and sonically adventurous second album âState Of Matterâ via FatCat Recordsâ modern
classical imprint 130701.
Shaped by Czocherâs relocation from Warsaw to Polandâs Baltic coast, âState Of Matterâ is a meditation on change, vulnerability, and forward motion. Inspired by the vastness of the ocean and surrounding forests, the album marks a creative evolution in which she expands both her instrumentation and expressive range. Percussive cello techniques, Moog synthesisers, non- analogue electronics and the first-ever inclusion of her own layered voice sit in symbiosis with her classical foundations.
Recorded at the historic Studio S4 at Polish Radio in Warsaw with engineer Mateusz Danek, the album builds on the compositional promise of her debut âDreamscapesâ (2023). Drawing from influences spanning Johann Sebastian Bach and ZoltĂĄn KodĂĄly to Max Richter and Steve Reich, the music balances technical precision with expressive spontaneity.
First single âBlueâ introduces the albumâs central theme of water through rhythmic motion and a newly introduced vocal âchoirâ of Czocherâs own voice. âWater served as my starting point,â she explains, âa poetic metaphor for exploring states of concentration and the quest for answers.â
Described as âone of Europeâs most esteemed contemporary cellistsâ - Loud & Quiet, Dobrawa Czocher is internationally recognised for her versatility across classical and contemporary music. Trained at Warsawâs Chopin University of Music and Germanyâs Hochschule fĂŒr Musik in Detmold, she has performed as a lead soloist with the MieczysĆaw KarĆowicz Symphony Orchestra and is widely known for her long-term collaboration with pianist Hania Rani, with whom she released BiaĆa Flaga (2015) and Inner Symphonies (2021) via Deutsche Grammophon.
The album is being supported by a string of high profile live solo and festival dates including Poland, Germany, UK and The Netherlands which will be announced very soon.
