Ā

Coheed and Cambria - Claudio Sanchez (guitar / vocals), Travis Stever (leadĀ guitar), Josh Eppard (drums) and Zach Cooper (bass) - emerged in the earlyĀ 2000s wedged between an emo renaissance and a metal revival. While theirĀ peers broke hearts and banged heads, Sanchez and co. were crafting GameĀ of Thrones-level fantasies around a storyline called ā€˜The Amory Wars’ thatĀ unfurls across 78 planets collectively known as Heaven’s Fence. Eight of theĀ band’s nine albums thus far (plus a small galaxy of comics and novels) dwellĀ in this world - and so does tenth album ā€˜The Father of Make Believe’. It’s justĀ that the sky is cracking now, revealing the guiding hand behind the scene.

Ā ā€œThroughout my career, I’ve navigated the insecurities of putting my truth out for the world to pick apart and scrutinize,ā€ says Sanchez, reflecting on ā€˜TheĀ Father of Make Believe’. ā€œI’ve chosen to keep the struggles of my life privateĀ out of respect and love to those people and events that inspired the art.Ā When I can’t express myself in words, I express in worlds.ā€

One way to look at ā€˜The Father of Make Believe’ is as Coheed and CambriaĀ establishing a desire to move forward while honouring a remarkable history.Ā Another: a series of questions, emotions, and thoughts at war with eachĀ other - ā€œa war within myself,ā€ as Sanchez puts it. ā€œI’ve lost time defining ideasĀ I want to see through. It’s beautiful to look back and enjoy it for what it was.ā€Ā He pauses. ā€œBut there's no need to go back.ā€ And why would he? CoheedĀ are finding new ways to bring new listeners into their universe. ā€˜The AmoryĀ Wars’ live on, but a new general is at the helm. Sanchez is ready to fight the
battles he’s relegated to his imagination for all these years.
